NORFOLK, Va. – Former Old Dominion women's soccer star Kathryn Hill (Dalry, Scotland) signed with Durham WFC, a women's football club based in Durham, North East England. Hill joins the club as part of the program's link with Durham University, and she will study for a master's degree in Education alongside playing for the FA WSL side and BUCS team.
The Durham Wildcats play their home games at New Ferens Park, Belmont. The team was founded in 2013 as a collaboration between South Durham and Cestria Girls and Durham University.
“I'm thrilled for Kathy, she is a player who has come to this program and taken every opportunity to better herself both technically and athletically,” explained ODU head coach Angie Hind. “I know she had various opportunities, but given that she also values education I think being able to play in the English league and combine that with a master's is ideal for her. There's no doubt Durham has landed a very good player who will make an impact. As a former captain at ODU, Kathy has also provided an example for many of our players who have ambitions to go on and play professionally after their college careers. I couldn't be more proud of her and I know the whole squad is excited for her and will be following her progress with keen interest.”
“It's really good to be here,” said Hill. “We've got an exciting season ahead and I can't wait to get started. It'll be good to combine education with playing. Education is something I've always felt is important and to be able to do that as well as playing in the Women's Super League is great. I'm really looking forward to it.”
Durham Manager Lee Sanders was pleased to capture the signature of Hill, stating, “I'm really happy to have Kathryn on board for next season. She's another player who has come over after a spell in America and joins us after being highly-recommended by her coach, Angie Hind, at Old Dominion who was involved in the national set-up in Scotland. After having her here for a short while I can understand why she came highly-recommended. She's a competitive individual and wants to win, which is what we want on this football club. She has come across to do a master's degree which again solidifies the importance of what we do here at Durham with the scholarship scheme and the value that can add to someone's future.”
Just last season, Hill was named the 2016 Team MVP, while garnering All-Conference USA honors, as well as C-USA All-Academic First-Team honors. She was also named to the Conference USA Honor Roll and earned C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals (for having a 3.75 cumulative GPA or higher).
