BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Old Dominion improved to 4-0 in road series this season with a 8-3 comeback victory over UAB in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.

Old Dominion (32-14, 16-8 C-USA) scored a combined eight runs from the sixth to eighth innings and Craig Lopez earned the win with 3.1 innings of shutout relief, as the Monarchs overcame an early 2-0 deficit.

UAB (22-26, 8-16 C-USA), behind the arm of starting pitcher Austin Thomas, carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth after scoring a run in both the third and fourth. However, the Monarchs chased Thomas after 5.2 innings and scored two runs on a wild pitch and error in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Monarchs then broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning, as ODU batted around in the frame. ODU then added two insurance runs in the eighth to secure the series-clinching victory.

At the plate, Kyle Battle, Jared Young and Zach Rutherford all collected three hits. Battle went 3-for-4 with two runs out of the leadoff spot, while Young and Rutherford both went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Nick Walker and Turner Bishop also added RBIs.

Lopez earned the victory on the mound, throwing 3.1 innings of shutout relief. Lopez allowed just two hits, while walking none and striking out four, which tied his season high. Freshman Michael Blanchard, who made his first career C-USA start, allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work.

Overall, the Monarchs are 11-1 in weekend series this season and moved into sole possession of second place in the Conference USA standings, three games behind first-place Southern Miss.

The Monarchs return to action with a pair of midweek games this upcoming week. ODU travels to Richmond at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, before hosting VCU on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
