BOCA RATON, Fla. -- No. 25 Old Dominion fell at Florida Atlantic, 6-1, in the opener of this weekend's three-game set on Thursday evening at FAU Baseball Stadium.

Florida Atlantic (32-18-1, 17-11 C-USA) scored all six of its runs in the first three innings, including a leadoff home run by Jared Shouppe in the bottom of the first.

The Owls added a run in the second and then opened the game up with four runs, all unearned, in the third.

FAU maintained its 6-0 advantage until the seventh inning, when Nick Walker's sacrifice fly scored Jared Young from third for the Monarchs' only run. Young reached base on a hit by pitch, his 17th of the season, setting a new program record for single-season hit by pitches.

Alex House, the Owls' normal Friday starter, threw the final five innings to close out the game for FAU.

Kyle Beam led Old Dominion (35-18, 18-10 C-USA) at the plate with a 3-for-4 night, including a double, and was the only Monarch with multiple hits. Five other Monarchs each added a hit, as ODU left 12 runners on base for the evening.

Sam Sinnen received the loss, dropping to 4-4 on the season. Sinnen allowed six runs, but only two earned, in five innings of work, while striking out five. Florida native Joe Strzelecki, Jim Wilkerson and Jake Josephs combined to throw three innings of shutout relief for ODU.

Despite the loss, Old Dominion needs to win one of the two remaining games against Florida Atlantic to clinch the No. 2 seed for the Conference USA Tournament, after LA Tech fell to Middle Tennessee, 6-3, tonight.

The series resumes tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. on CUSA.tv and STAR 1310. Adam Bainbridge is expected to start for Old Dominion against FAU's Blake Sanderson.
