NORFOLK, Va. -- No. 25 Old Dominion defeated VCU, 4-1, on Wednesday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex to sweep the season series against the Rams.

Old Dominion (33-15) scored two runs in both the third and seventh innings and the Monarch bullpen threw 5.1 innings of shutout relief to secure the victory.

Kyle Beam opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Following a Kyle Battle single in the ensuing at-bat, Jared Young doubled down the right field line, scoring Battle, to give ODU a 2-0 lead through three.

VCU (29-19), who currently sits in second place in the Atlantic 10, answered in the top of the fourth, scoring a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. However, the ODU bullpen, consisting of Culver Lamb, Craig Lopez, Isaiah Nelson and Corey Klak, then combined to throw 5.1 innings of shutout ball, as the Monarchs tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.

Lopez earned the win on the mound, improving to 6-2 on the season. Lopez threw two innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. Klak picked up his third save of the season, after tossing a scoreless ninth. Starter Michael Blanchard, who made his second start in the last four days, threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run.

Overall, the Monarch pitching staff combined to strand 14 VCU runners on base, while holding the Rams to .263 (5-for-19) with runners on base and .000 (0-for-8) with runners in scoring position.

At the plate, Young was the lone Monarch with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Beam went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, while Turner Bishop and Bryce Windham each added RBIs.

ODU returns to action this weekend with a Conference USA series against FIU at The Bud. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
