NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team hosted a soccer clinic for refugee children of poverty and war stricken countries. Members of the women’s soccer program joined the men’s team in playing games with the children on the sunny Saturday morning.
“The Clinic was an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience for my players and staff,” said head coach Alan Dawson. “The relationships we made with the children is the start of a strong bond that through Soccer, can change the lives of all involved. We look forward to our future involvement with these wonderful children.”
Approximately 95 families came to participate in the clinic hosted by the ODU Monarchs. The student-athletes played pick up soccer games and 'Simon Says' with a soccer ball with the children. Each child that participated received a t-shirt and a mini soccer ball courtesy of Adidas.
In addition to the games, the coaches and team enjoyed lunch with the children and their families provided by Aramark and Subway.
Several children received donated bikes and all the families were able to browse through dozens of boxes of donated clothes and shoes and take them home for free.
