LEXINGTON, Va. -- Jared Young went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs and Kyle Battle went 4-for-6 with four RBIs, but Old Dominion fell to VMI, 17-14, in a slugfest on Wednesday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.

With the loss, Old Dominion (22-8) has dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.

VMI (15-15) scored at least two or more runs in each of the first five innings to build a 17-6 lead heading into the sixth. Shaun Wood's grand slam in the top of the sixth cut the lead to 10 and the Monarchs then tacked on a run in the seventh and three in the ninth, including a two-run shot by Young, to close the final deficit to three.

Young's multi-home run game was the first by a Monarch since Seth Woodard against VMI last season.

At the plate, Wood also recorded a four-RBI game with his second grand slam of the season, while freshmen Vinnie Pasquantino and Devon Adams both notched multi-hit games. Culver Lamb also homered for ODU, belting a solo shot to center for his third home run of the season.

On the mound, Jim Wilkerson Isaiah Nelson and Craig Lopez combined to shut out VMI for the final 3.1 innings.

The Monarchs remain on the road for a three-game Conference USA series at Middle Tennessee this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
