DOVER, Del. – Old Dominion women's lacrosse earned the fifth spot in the 2017 Atlantic Sun conference tournament after defeating Delaware State 20-5 in the regular season finale in Dover, Del.
Four Lady Monarchs recorded hat tricks in the 20-5 win including Connor Carson, Megan Cameron, Colby Muller and Sophia Richie. Brooke Stein and Ryann Bauer tallied two goals apiece, while Megan Topper, Haley Rineer, Lauren Irvine and Michelle Hallman all got a piece of the net.
Maggi Buckley played the first 30 minutes en route to picking up her 9th win this season. She made five saves allowing four first half goals, while Lauren Ey played the second 30 giving up one goal and collecting two saves.
Megan Topper, in addition to her solo goal, added four assists that put her tied for second with Lisa Bernadini in the ODU records with 66 career assists. Carson and Morgan Marrale dished out two assists, while Katie Miller and Mary Katherine Maloney each had one.
The Lady Monarchs opened the scoring with a goal by Megan Cameron just 11 seconds into competition. Five more ODU goals would be scored before Delaware State collected their first. Richie scored back-to-back, followed by two Muller goals and Richie added the cap to go up 6-0 with 22:28 to play in the first half.
DSU scored twice off of goals by Iman Hasan and Brionna Watkins to put the Hornets on the board and the score at 6-2.
Carson put the Lady Monarchs up by five and Brooke Stein increased the lead to seven with back-to-back rockets into the net. A Del. St. goal split another trio of ODU goals scored by Bauer, Hallman and Cameron. Hallman's goal was her first collegiate goal and helped put ODU up 11-3 over DSU.
Coming out of the half with a 12-4 lead, Megan Topper got the scoring train running as the Lady Monarchs scored eight unanswered goals to gain a running clock advantage and set a new season-high, 20 goals scored.
Old Dominion returns to action on Thursday, May 4 in the first round of the 2017 ASUN Conference Tournament. This years tournament is hosted by Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. Teams find out Sunday afternoon who they will play and the final seeding for next weeks tournament.
