FAIRFAX, Va. – Old Dominion rowing helped the Big 12 take home first at the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, April 23, in Fairfax, Virginia.
The Lady Monarchs joined forces with Kansas and West Virginia to form a Big 12 triumvirate that competed against the A-10 (George Mason, George Washington and Dayton) and the CAA (Delaware, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo).
The Big 12 claimed the scoring title with 52 points while the A-10 placed second with 30. The CAA came in third with 26 points.
In the morning session, ODU took on the two teams from the Big 12 conference, Kansas and West Virginia, for inter-conference heats. The winner of each race advanced to the A-Final, while the second place finisher went on the to the B-Final and the third place to the C-Final.
In the afternoon, the teams would face the respective finishers from the two other conferences to obtain points for the pride of their conference.
The Lady Monarchs started the day off taking second behind Kansas in the first V8+ race with a time of 6:48.090. Advancing to the B-Final, ODU claimed a first place finish against the A-10 representative Dayton and the CAA team of Eastern Michigan.
ODU brought up the rear in the second V8+ Big 12 heat with a time of 7:09.480. In the C-Final heat for the second V8+, the Lady Monarchs beat out teams from Buffalo and Dayton finishing with a time of 7:01.800.
ODU’s V4+ boat finished behind Kansas and WVU to advance to the C-Final. Facing teams from Eastern Michigan and George Mason, the Lady Monarchs came in ahead of their opponents for their third first place finish.
Old Dominion has two weeks off before they resume competition at the Big 12 Championships on May 12-14. The Big 12 Championships are held in oak Ridge, Tenn. by host school the University of Tennessee.
