NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion lacrosse defeated Stetson 15-4 Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Senior Connor Carson and freshman Brooke Stein each recorded a hat trick in the win over Stetson. ODU improves to 5-4, 1-1 ASUN, while Stetson falls to 0-8, 0-1 ASUN.
Carson and Stein led the scoring with three goals apiece, while Cydney Tutchton and Megan Topper each added two of their own. Morgan Marrale collected three assists after connecting with Stein on all three of her goals.
Also scoring for the Lady Monarchs were Sophie Richie, Katie Miller, Megan Cameron, Lauren Irvine and Hanna Breslin. Marrale led with three assists, while Cameron and Stein each added one of their own for a total of five assists in the game.
Senior keeper, Maggi Buckley (390), moved past head coach Heather Holt (386) in the career saves column in the ODU lacrosse record book with 11 saves on the day. Coming into today’s game Buckley needed seven to tie her coach.
Stetson put the first goal on the scoreboard in the third minute of the game after Shelby Lehmann connected with Sam MaGuire to go up 1-0 (27:32).
ODU responded with three consecutive goals as Megan Cameron got the Lady Monarchs started at 24:51 on the clock. Carson scored her first goal and Katie Miller added one to give ODU a 3-1 lead with 19:53 to play in the first half.
Taylor Patrizi scored the second goal for the Hatters, their last of the half, off the pass from Lehmann at 19:21.
Carson netted her second goal of the game four minutes later to ignite the ODU offense, which scored nine unanswered goals, five that closed out the first half.
Stein scored her first-of-three goals at 12:37 from Marrale to put the Lady Monarchs up 6-2. Tutchton, Carson and Richie closed out the scoring to give the home team an 8-2 advantage heading into half time.
ODU continued on its hot streak with back-to-back Stein goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Tutchton netted her second goal with 20:54 to go on an assist from Stein and Lauren Irvine scored to give ODU the 12-2 lead and earn a running clock.
Patrizi scored for Stetson in the 45th minute, but ODU answered with three more goals going up 15-3 with 5:41 remaining. Topper collected her two goals over a four-minute window, while freshman Hanna Breslin scored her first collegiate goal.
The final goal came with 27 second remaining from Stetson's Devon McKercher, to put the final score at 15-4 and a win for the Lady Monarchs.
ODU led the stat lines in shots 33-27, ground balls 22-11, clears 22-16 and free position shots 3-0. The nine different scorers is a season-high, passing the seven that scored at Richmond. Carson’s hat trick puts her at 20 goals on the season.
Old Dominion heads into their bye week following today’s game and will compete again when they travel to Furman on April 7 to continue ASUN competition.
