NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-2 victory over VMI on Tuesday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Old Dominion (12-4) busted the game open in the bottom of the first, as the Monarchs chased VMI (7-8) starter Zac Kent after just five batters. Kent issued four walks and one hit by pitch to open the game and did not record an out before getting pulled.
Following the string of free passes, Culver Lamb and Kyle Battle both recorded RBI singles to headline the seven-run frame, which tied a season high for runs in an inning by ODU this season. The Monarchs also scored seven in the third inning of the season opener against LIU Brooklyn. The Monarchs have now scored in the first inning in eight of the 16 games and are 7-1 when scoring in the first.
On the mound, six ODU pitchers combined to allow just three hits and one earned run in the game, as starter Joe Strzelecki earned his first victory at Old Dominion. The juco transfer went four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out four.
Five different Monarchs then each pitched one inning of relief to close out the game, including a perfect ninth from Isaiah Nelson.
At the plate, Lamb finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Battle went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Vinnie Pasquantino recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-3 day with two runs and an RBI, while Will Morgan went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
In addition, redshirt freshman catcher Evan Baer recorded both his first career hit and RBI with a run-scoring double down the right field line in the eighth inning.
ODU and VMI are scheduled to conclude the midweek series tomorrow at 3 p.m. at The Bud. Starting pitchers have not been announced by either team.
