NORFOLK, Va. – Women’s lacrosse head coach Heather Holt announced the 2017 Lady Monarch captains on Thursday afternoon. Serving as this years captains for the lacrosse team are seniors Maggi Buckley, Megan Cameron and Connor Carson. Last season the three were key players in the Lady Monarchs reaching and winning the 2016 Atlantic Sun championship and making the programs first NCAA Tournament appearance. “Maggi Buckley, Megan Cameron, and Connor Carson have been the backbone of our team for the past four years,” said Coach Holt. “They lead by example on and off the field each day. These three seniors have had a major role in the growth and development of our program over the past four years. Their dedication, passion, and hard work is contagious. I have no doubt that these Captains will lead our team with confidence into an incredible 2017 season.” Buckley started all 20 games and totaled 1115:04 minutes in net for Old Dominion. She made 137 saves for a .433 save percentage while allowing 172 goals by opponents for a 9.26 goals-against-average. Buckley was named to the All-A-Sun second team, the VaSID All-State second team and was the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week (3/1). Cameron scored 16 goals with an assist for 17 points on the season. She had two game-winning goals including the golden goal for the 11-10 victory over Detroit in overtime of the 2016 A-Sun Championship. Cameron added 17 ground balls, seven draw controls and six caused turnovers to round out her seasons stats. For her performance in the A-Sun Championship match, Cameron was named to the All-Tournament team. Carson returns as the second leading scorer with 25 goals, including three game-winners, while adding four assists for 29 points in the 2016 season. She commanded the draw circle with a team-high 70 draw controls while also tallying 21 ground balls and forcing 23 turnovers. Carson earned first-team All-A-Sun laurels, was named to the VaSID second-team All-State and made the All-Tournament team. In addition, she earned A-Sun Player of the Week (2/23) and A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week (3/8) honors. The Lady Monarchs take to the field on February 15 for the season opener at VCU in Richmond, Va. at 4 p.m. on the Cary Street Field.
