NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 26 nationally ranked Old Dominion men’s tennis team will put its 8-2 record and No. 26 ranking on the line starting Friday, Feb. 24 at Yale (5-3) at 2:00 p.m. in New Haven, Conn., before taking on Penn (6-4) on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 9:00 a.m. in Pennsylvania.
Old Dominion is coming off a victory over Clemson over a week ago, by a 4-0 score.
No. 45 Adam Moundir/Jacob Nicolussi are coming off a doubles win against Clemson. Sophomore Aziz Kijametovic moved to 6-2 on the season after the Monarchs’ trip in South Carolina. Junior Michael Weindl moved to 5-1 on the year, splitting his last two singles matches. No. 32 Adam Moundir, 6-1, will look to snag two wins this weekend as well after he received his first loss of the season at South Carolina.
Meet Yale:
Yale has started the season with a 5-3 record and are coming off a win against St. John’s, 4-0. The Bulldogs started the season with wins against William & Mary (5-2), Buffalo (4-3) and Army (4-2). Yale suffered its first loss to Loyola Marymount, 4-3. The Bulldogs then defeated Furman, 4-2. Yale recorded two straight losses against Cornell, 5-1, and Harvard 4-0, before its most recent win against St. Johns.
The Bulldogs Senior Tyler Lu, 5-0, is coming off his second win vs. a ranked opponent this season. Lu plays in the No. 1 singles spot for Yale. Freshman Dylan King is 6-2 on the season playing in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots. Junior Ziqi Wang has started the 4-0 in the No. 2 spot for Yale but has missed the last three matches (injury).
Meet Penn:
Penn has started the season with a 6-4 record and is coming off a 2-1 record in the ECAC Championships over the weekend. The Quakers started the season with a win against Middle Tennessee, 5-2. Penn followed that match with a loss to Vanderbilt, 6-1. The Quakers then went on to beat both Georgetown and Temple by a 6-1 score. Penn split two matches against Big 10 opposition, falling to Minnesota 4-3 while defeating Wisconsin 4-3. The Quakers suffered a loss to Rice, 6-1, before heading into the ECAC Championships. The Quakers fell to Dartmouth 4-1, but defeated St. John’s 4-1 and Harvard 4-2, finishing 5th in the tournament.
The Quakers Sophomore Kyle Mautner finds himself ranked No. 106 in the ITA Top 125. Mautner is 9-1 on the season in the No. 1 singles spot. Junior Josh Pompan, who is 6–2 on the season, playing at the No. 2 singles spot for the Quakers. Freshman Max Cancilla has started the season with a 6-3 record.
