MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Old Dominion freshmen Chris Mauriello, Abner Romero and Ali Wahab recorded top-four finishes at the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic last weekend held at Millersville University. Mauriello placed third at 157 while Romero registered a fourth-place finish at 165 and Wahab grabbed third at heavyweight.
Chris Mauriello started off the day with a major decision and a hard-fought 10-9 decision before falling in the semifinals to NCAA qualifier Justin Staudenmayer from Brown, 6-0. The Hauppauge, New York native went on to pick up a fall in the consolation semis and an 11-6 decision over Army Prep's Jimmy Saylor to place third.
California native Abner Romero won a wild 17-12 bout over Millersville's Shane Ruhnke in the opening round, defeated Lehigh's Ian Brown, 6-2, in round two and then earned a first period pin to reach the semis, where he was defeated by eventual champion Joe Velliquette from Penn. He split matches in the consolations to earn fourth place.
Heavyweight Ali Wahab went on a tear through the consolation bracket after dropping his initial bout of the day. The Michigan native picked up three-straight victories and two medical forfeits to finish in third place.
Also competing for the Monarchs were: Tanner Stephens (1-2), Will Verallis (1-2), Luke Drugac (3-2), Dean Drugac (2-2), Connor Frey (0-2) and Eric Hall (0-2).
