1930-1940

Sept. 12, 1930: Norfolk Division opens its doors.

Sept. 26, 1930: Division plays first football game. Loses to Suffolk High, 7-0 in Baine Field.

Nov. 1930: Defeats So. Norfolk HS, 22-11 in first men’s basketball game played at Blair Junior High.

April 1930: Defeats Deep Creek HS, 8-3 to win first baseball game.

Oct. 14, 1932: Played Miami (Florida) in football, losing, 6-2 in the Orange Bowl.

June 18, 1935: Foreman Field project approved, first for 5,500 seats, then 15,000.

Oct. 3, 1936: Foreman Field dedicated (W&M vs. UVa.) in front of 15,000 fans.

April 1938: Cecil Griffin runs a 9.9 dash and Johnny Brown runs a 9.8 dash against Wake Forest for what is believed to have been fastest collegiate times that year.

Nov. 22, 1940: Tom Scott resigns as athletic director and football coach with a 62-19-4 record.

1941-1950

Aug. 1941: Football discontinued at the Norfolk Division, because of a $10,000 debt and a Southern Conference ruling that as a branch of William and Mary, the Division could not allow freshmen to play, which only left sophomores.

Sept. 1942: Scrap Chandler named Athletic Direc­tor as well as Head Coach for baseball, basketball and after the war, track and field and swimming.

Sept. 1947: Bud Metheny named basketball and baseball coach.

1951-1960

April 1951: Buzz Sawyer runs the fastest junior college mile in the nation with a time of 4:25.

May 1956: First four-year graduating class.

Sept. 1956: Lou Plummer named track and field coach.

Sept. 1957: Pete Robinson named wrestling and golf coach

March 1959: Leo Anthony becomes first basketball All-American.

Aug. 1959: Accepted as member of the NCAA.

Jan. 4, 1960: Played first basketball game at the Norfolk Arena vs. Hampden-Sydney.

1961-1970

April 29, 1961: Bobby Mears throws first Monarch No-Hitter.

August 1961: Special faculty committee chaired by Professor John West chose “Monarchs” as the new name for athletic teams to “link the traditions of the past to the realities of the present.”

Sept. 1961: Norfolk Division becomes 16th member of the Mason-Dixon Conference.

Aug. 2, 1962: Board chooses the name of Old Dominion College.

Sept. 1963: Bud Metheny succeeds Scrap Chandler as Athletic Director at Old Domin­ion.

May 31, 1963: Baseball wins NCAA College Div. East Regional.

June 6, 1964: Baseball wins second NCAA College Div. East Regional.

March 1965: Sonny Allen hired as men’s basketball coach.

Dec. 2, 1966: Ron Drews hauls in school record 33 rebounds vs. Richmond Professional Institute.

March 1966: Carl Ragland becomes first wrestling All-American at Old Dominion.

May 1966: Scrap Chandler retires as swim coach.

May 1966: Lou Cappi places fifth in the NCAA in the High Hurdles and earns College Div. All-American honors.

May 1966: George Consolvo wins NCAA Eastern Region Tennis Championship.

May 1967: George Consolvo wins second straight Eastern Region Tennis Champion­ship.

Feb. 14, 1968: Bob Pritchett scores 67 points and Harry Lozon scores 33 vs. RPI in the Norfolk Arena. Monarchs defeat RPI, 152-110 in most points in school his­tory.

March 1969: Carl Ragland becomes first wrestler to win NCAA National Championship, at 152 pounds.

May 1969: Old Dominion leaves the Mason Dixon to become an independent.

June 1969: Golfer J.P. Leigh places fifth in NCAA Div. II. National Championships, then competes in Division I National Championships.

Sept. 1, 1969: University status granted to Old Dominion.

Sept. 1970: Jim Jarrett named Director of Athlet­ics

March 1970: Wayne Bright becomes second wrestler at Old Dominion to win a National Championship at 142-pounds. Then places fourth in the Div. I Championships.

Dec. 5, 1970: First regular season basketball game played at field house. Monarchs beat Washington & Lee, 84-60.

March 1970: Mary Fleet earns AIAW All-American honors in swimming, the school’s first. She outscored 36 other teams by herself and helped ODU place 14th in the National Championships.

June 1970: Harry Lozon becomes first basketball player at Old Dominion to be drafted in the NBA. He was selected in the 13th round by the San Diego Rock­ets.

1971-1980

March 19, 1971: Men’s basketball loses to Evansville, 97-82 in first NCAA Div. II Championship Final for Old Dominion.

May 1972: Lou Plummer retires.

March 1973: Jim Clark becomes the school’s first swimming All-American in the 100-yard freestyle.

March 1974: Terry Perdew wins the Division II wrestling National Championship at 118-pounds

Aug. 1974: Old Dominion initiates first athletic scholarships for women.

Feb. 23, 1975: The first Donna Doyle scholarship game held. Lady Monarchs defeated Virginia Tech, 95-72.

March 14, 1975: Old Dominion wins first National title, a 76-74 decision over New Orleans. Game played in Evansville, IN.

March 21, 1975: Sonny Allen named NABC and AP College Division Coach of the Year.

April 1975: Sonny Allen resigns as basketball coach

July 1975: Paul Webb named men’s basketball coach.

Nov. 1975: Soccer team advances to NCAA Div. II Regionals. Compiled a 13-2 record. Prince Attoh, the Player of the Year in Virginia, scored 26 goals in one season.

Nov. 1976: Old Dominion moves up to Division One. School joins ECAC South Conference.

Aug. 1976: Freshman Nancy Lieberman plays for USA women’s Olympic basketball team which wins silver medal in Montreal.

Dec. 1976: Men’s basketball beats Atlantic Chris­tian, 110-71 for first win in Div. I., then beats Delaware State, 113-47 for first Div. I victory.

March 2, 1977: Old Dominion defeats Georgetown for ECAC South title.

March 9, 1977: Compete in first NIT, losing to Vil­lanova in overtime, in Scope.

March 16, 1977: Wilson Washington becomes school’s first basketball Division I All-American.

Aug. 13, 1977: Scrap Chandler Pool dedicated.

June 1978: Marianne Stanley named as women’s head basketball coach.

Feb. 4, 1978: Inge Nissen hauls in a school record 28 rebounds against Longwood.

March 18, 1978: Women’s basketball defeats Texas, 70-60 to win Women’s NIT in Amarillo, Texas.

Dec. 19, 1978: Women’s basketball ranked Number 1 in AP poll and will hold that spot all year.

March 4, 1979: Men’s hoops defeats Clemson in double over­time in NIT second round game.

March 25, 1979: Women’s basketball defeats La. Tech, 76-65 in Greensboro, NC, for first AIAW National crown.

March, 25, 1979: Nancy Lieberman named winner of the Wade trophy.

Marianne Stanley named National Coach of the Year.

April 1979: Old Dominion signs #1 women’s basketball recruit in the nation in Anne Donovan.

Oct. 1979: State approves funds to renovate Foreman Field and build new baseball stadium.

Nov. 19, 1979: Monarchs upset Russian National team, 76-74 in overtime at Scope.

Dec. 14, 1979: Russian National team defeats women’s bas­ketball, 76-66 in front of the largest single-game crowd for women’s collegiate game (10,237). Televised by ESPN.

Jan. 19, 1980: Men’s basketball defeats #3 Syracuse in Scope and on NBC, 68-67.

Feb. 18, 1980: First Hall of Fame Induction held.

March 1, 1980: Men’s basketball defeats Navy in the Hampton Coliseum for first NCAA Automatic Tourna­ment bid.

March 7, 1980: Old Dominion plays UCLA in first NCAA Tournament in Tempe, AZ.

Ronnie Valentine scores 14 points to establish a new NCAA record of 101 consecutive games scoring in double figures.

March 23, 1980: Women’s basketball defeats Tennessee, 68-53 at Central Michigan for second AIAW National Championship.

April 1980: Men’s tennis player Robert Hale ranked 43rd nationally.

June 1980: Bud Metheny retires.

Dec. 11, 1980: Anne Donovan scores 50 points at Norfolk State, the most in school’s women’s basketball history.

1981-1990

Jan. 10, 1981: Men’s basketball defeats #1 DePaul in the Horizon of Chicago, IL, 63-62. DePaul’s first home loss in 48 games.

Feb. 20, 1981: 10,253 sellout crowd attends ODU vs. La. Tech women’s basketball game.

March, 1981: Women’s Lacrosse plays first intercollegiate season, with Beth Anders as head coach

Sept. 1981: Soccer team ranked fifth nationally. Highest ever.

Sept. 11, 1981: 5,003 watch Soccer vs. Philadelphia Textiles at Foreman Field.

March 26 & 28: Hosts First NCAA Women Basketball Final Four at Scope.

May 15, 1982: Old Dominion announces that it will join the Sun Belt Conference.

June 1982: Mark Wasinger becomes the school’s first Division I, first-team baseball All-American.

Nov. 20, 1982: Field Hockey wins first NCAA Title defeating UConn, 3-2.

March 6, 1982: Men’s basketball defeats James Madison, 58-57 to win ECAC Title.

June 1982: Women’s sailors win first ICYRA National Title in Seattle, WA.

Nov. 1983: Field Hockey wins second NCAA Crown. Defeated UConn, 3-1 in three overtimes.

March 1983: Anne Donovan named first Naismith Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year.

April 1 & 3: Hosts second NCAA Women’s Final Four at Scope.

May 13-15, 1983: Host Sun Belt Baseball Championships.

June 1983: K.C. Fullmer becomes first sailing All-Ameri­can at Old Dominion.

Nov. 1984: Soccer team wins first Sun Belt Conference title.

Nov. 1984: Field Hockey wins third NCAA Crown. ODU defeats Iowa, 5-1 in Springfield, MA.

Jan. 10, 1985: Paul Webb wins 500th, 86-60 over UNC Char­lotte in Scope.

March 31, 1985: Women’s basketball defeats Georgia, 70-65 for NCAA Title in Austin, TX.

May 14, 1985: Old Dominion wins Sun Belt Baseball Title with

Nov. 23-24 1985: Old Dominion hosts NCAA Field Hockey Championships at Foreman Field.

Oct. 16, 1986: Board of Visitors approve a new logo and color change on campus. The new colors are slate blue and silver.

Nov. 22-23 1986: Host NCAA Field Hockey Final Four at Foreman Field.

Feb. 12, 1986: Men’s basketball ranked 25th nationally by Associated Press (24 votes), high­est ever. Ranked 31st by USA Today (Sagrin) and 28th by The Sporting News.

March 13, 1986: Men’s basketball defeats West Virginia, 72- 64 to win first ever NCAA Tournament game in Div. I., in Greensboro, NC.

April 13, 1986: Baseball Monarchs ranked 7th nation­ally by Baseball America and 10th by Collegiate Baseball, highest ever.

April 1987: Marianne Stanley resigns as women’s basketball coach.

July 6, 1987: Wendy Larry named women’s basketball coach

May 1987: Women’s Sailors win National Title in New York.

March 16, 1988: Frank Smith dishes out seven assists at Ohio State to become the school’s all-time assist leader with 883.

Nov. 13, 1988: Mike Martin wins Sailing Single Handed National Championship in New Lon­don, CT.

Nov. 19, 1988: Sailors win Sloop National Championships in Santa Cruz, CA.

June 1989: Sailors win Dinghy National title in Chicago, Ill. Junior sailor Terry Hutchinson named Collegiate National Sailor of the Year. Old Dominion wins first Fowle Trophy as top Collegiate program.

Nov.19, 1989: Sailors win sloop National title in New in Charleston, SC.

Soccer advances to first NCAA Div. I Regional at Wake Forest.

Nov. 21, 1989: Field Hockey defeats Iowa, 2-1 to win fourth NCAA Championship at Penn.

May 18, 1990: Old Dominion joins the Colonial Athletic Association.

May 1990: Dee Pritchett receives the Kaufman Prize, one of the highest academic honors given at the University.

Sept. 12, 1990: 3, 207 watch first soccer match at new stadium. ODU and W&M tie, 1-1.

Nov. 23, 1990: Field Hockey defeats North Carolina, 5-0 to win fifth NCAA Championship.

June 9, 1990: Sailors win ICYRA Team Race Title in Boston. Terry Hutchinson named National Sailor of the Year (2nd straight year). Old Dominion awarded its sec­ond straight Fowle Trophy as the top collegiate program.

1991-2000

March 27, 1991: Oliver Purnell named Head Basketball Coach.

May 22, 1991: Golfer Jon Hurst takes 6th in NCAA East Regional at Yale.

June 1991: Chris Gatling becomes first Monarch basketball player drafted in first round of NBA draft.

June 5, 1991: Jon Hurst becomes first ODU golfer to reach NCAA Championships, in Monterey, California.

Nov. 7, 1991: Soccer defeats JMU for first CAA title. Field Hockey wins second CAA title for ODU.

Nov. 22, 1991: Field Hockey wins sixth NCAA national title. Defeated North Carolina, 2-0.

March 9, 1992: Men’s basketball wins CAA Title by beating JMU in the Richmond Coli­seum.

March 14, 1992: Women’s Basketball defeats East Caro­lina for CAA Title at Old Dominion.

July 20, 1992: 4,200 watch the USA Olympic Soccer team tie Bermuda, 1-1 at the soccer sta­dium. Head Coach Ralph Perez served as a special assistant for the USA, while Paul Caan and Neil Paynter played for Bermuda.

Nov. 22, 1992: Field Hockey wins 7th NCAA title in Richmond. Sailors win Sloop for its 8th ICYRA National title in Honolulu, HI.

Mar. 13, 1993: Women’s basketball wins second con­secutive CAA Tournament with win over William and Mary.

April 13, 1993: Old Dominion announces gender equity compliance plan and the addition of women’s soccer and the elimination of men’s cross country.

June 1993: Baseball pitcher, Wayne Gomes is the fourth overall first round selection in draft by Philadelphia.

March 1994: Jody Staylor places second in the NCAA Wrestling National Championships at 126 lbs.

April 26, 1994: Jeff Capel named men’s basketball coach.

May 1994: Kevin Larkin receives the Kaufman Prize, one of the highest academic honors given at the University.

May 16, 1994: Anne Donovan is inducted into the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Hall of Fame.

May 22, 1994: Baseball captures first CAA title.

July 12, 1994: Tony Guzzo named head baseball coach.

Sept. 3, 1994: Women’s soccer defeats Virginia. Wes­leyan, 2-0 for inaugural win.

Sept. 1994: Darryl Cummings named Director of men’s and women’s tennis.

Nov. 6, 1994: Field Hockey captures fourth straight CAA title.

Dec. 1994: Miguel Rosa is ranked 45th nationally in tennis.

Feb. 5, 1995: Wendy Larry wins 200th career game with win at William and Mary.

Feb.16, 1995: Lady Monarchs defeat Richmond to set CAA win streak at 49 games.

March 11, 1995: Lady Monarchs win fourth straight CAA title in basketball.

March 14, 1995: Lady Monarchs ranked 25th in final AP Hoop Poll.

March 17, 1995: Old Dominion defeats third seed and Big East Champion Villanova, 89-81 in triple overtime in the NCAA Regional at Albany, NY.

March 18, 1995: Heavyweight Nick Hall places fifth at NCAA Wrestling Championships to earn All-American honors.

April 23, 1995: Women’s lacrosse captures first CAA title with 9-7 overtime win vs. Delaware.

April 26, 1995: Joe Pereira named head women’s soccer coach.

May 17, 1995: Anne Donovan is inducted into the Bas­ketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.

May 21, 1995: Baseball Monarchs capture second straight CAA Title.

July 11, 1995: KC Fullmer resigns as head sailing coach.

August 7, 1995: Mitch Brindley named head sailing coach.

Oct. 1, 1995: Sophomore women’s tennis player, Tzipi Obziler captures the National Clay Court title in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dec. 10, 1995: Samantha Salvia, senior field hockey player, becomes the university’s first Rhodes Scholar.

Dec. 12, 1995: Tzipi Obziler is ranked number one in the nation by the ITA.

Feb. 5, 1996: Lady Monarchs return to the nation’s top ten for the first time since 1985, with a #10 ranking in the AP and USA Today polls.

Mar. 11, 1996: The Lady Monarch basketball squad is ranked #6 in the final AP poll, and 10th in the final USA Today poll.

Mar. 18, 1996: The Lady Monarch basketball team defeats Toledo 72-66 to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Sept. 22, 1996: Field hockey ends UNC’s 29-game win streak with a 4-3 overtime victory at UNC.

Nov. 23, 1996: Field hockey advances to NCAA Semifi­nals.

Nov. 24, 1996: Sailing captures ICYRA Collegiate Singlehanded National Championships in Annapolis, Md. and took 5th place at Sloop Nationals.

Dec. 17, 1996: #4 ranked Lady Monarchs defeated #1 ranked Stanford 83-76 in Norfolk.

Mar. 2, 1997: Lady Monarchs defeat East Carolina 83-46 in Richmond for their sixth straight CAA basketball crown.

Mar. 3, 1997: Men’s basketball captures CAA title with 62-58 overtime win against JMU.

Mar. 24, 1997: Lady Monarchs defeat #7 Florida 52-51 to advance to the NCAA Final Four for first time since 1985.

Mar. 28, 1997: Lady Monarchs defeat #3 Stanford 83-82 in overtime to advance to NCAA champion­ship game.

Mar. 29, 1997: Ticha Penicheiro and Clarisse Machan­guana named Kodak All-Americans. Wendy Larry named National Coach of the Year by Sporting News, RCA, and US Basketball Writers Association.

Mar. 30, 1997: Lady Monarchs lose 68-59 to Tennessee in NCAA Championship

Nov. 25, 1997: Mark Poag goes 9 for 9 in treys vs. VMI to set a new NCAA record.

Feb., 21, 1998: Men’s Swimming & Diving captures ODU’s 1st CAA Title & go undefeated.

May 30, 1998: Sailors capture ICYRA Dinghy National.

June 3, 1998: Sailors capture ICYRA Dinghy National Champion­ships.

Jan. 1999: Beth Anders named National Field Hockey Coach-of- the-Year.

Feb. 1999: Ted Constant donates $5 million to the convocation center project.

June 1999: Cal Bowdler picked 17th in the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks

Aug. 1999: Sports Illustrated for Women selects ODU as the 19th best college for women’s athletics.

Nov. 8, 1999: Men’s soccer rises to 13th in the NSCAA National Poll

Nov. 27, 1999: Capel wins 100th game at ODU with a 61-57 decision over Central Florida.

Dec. 24, 1999: Gray Simons, wrestling coach, is named by Sports Illustrated as the 3rd greatest athlete of the 20th century in Virginia.

2000-2010

Mar. 1, 2000: Junior Andre McCullum is selected to the NABC Student Advisor Board.

Mar. 11, 2000:  women’s basketball defeats UNCW, 92-49 to win an NCAA record ninth straight CAA title.

Oct. 15, 2000: Women’s soccer coach Joe Pereira wins his 200th career match

with a victory over American

Nov. 19, 2000: Field Hockey captures ninth NCAA National Crown with 3-1 win

over North Carolina. Marina DiGia­como becomes NCAA All-Time points leader with 414 points, and becomes the fifth Lady Monarch to be presented the Honda Award.

Feb. 1 , 2001: Men’s soccer player Atilla Vendegh named Freshman All-American by Soccer America, school’s first.

April 12, 2001: Blaine Taylor named Men’s basketball head coach.

April 22, 2001: Women’s tennis team defeats W&M, 4-0 to win first CAA title

July 15, 2001: Lacrosse coach Sue Stahl leads USA to their fourth world cup title.

May 12, 2001: Women’s tennis team competes in their first ever NCAA Tournament. Nataly Cahana becomes first Division I Tennis All-American.

May 22, 2002: Old Dominion announces women’s golf to be added and women’s cross country to be dropped from the curriculum.

June 1, 2002: Women’s sailing squad captures the ICSA National Championship in Honolulu, HI.

Oct. 25, 2002: The Ted Constant Convocation Center opens.

Nov. 10, 2002: Anna Tunnicliffe win the ICSA Singlehanded Na­tional Championship in Houston, TX. It is ODU’s 13th National Championship in that sport.

Nov. 23, 2002: Men’s Soccer beats Richmond, 3-0 to win the school’s first ever NCAA DIV. I Men’s soccer tournament first round game.

Dec. 9, 2002: Tiffany Snow becomes the sixth ODU field hockey player to win the Honda Award in that sport

April 22, 2003: Men’s golf captures the school’s first ever CAA Championship in a one hole playoff with UNCW. and Geoffrey Harris win the individual champion­ship.

May 17, 2003: ODU’s men’s golf team places 15th at the NCAA West Regionals. It was the school’s first ever NCAA Div. I tournament.

August, 2003: Pitcher Justin Verlander goes 5-1 for Team USA and helps earn a silver medal in the Pan Am Games.

Oct. 7, 2003: Men’s Soccer ranked second nationally by SOCCER AMERICA

Nov. 23, 2003: Anna Tunnicliffe becomes the first collegiate sailor to win back to back ICSA women’s singlehanded national championships. Championships were held in St. Petersburg, FL.

April 23, 2004: Nataly Cahana named CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the fourth straight year.

May 30, 2004: Men’s tennis doubles players Izak van der Merwe and Zoltan Csanadi reach the semi- finals of the NCAA National Championships, eventually losing to the 3rd seed team from Georgia. Both became ODU’s first ITA All-American.

June 7, 2004: Baseball pitcher Justin Verlander becomes the high­est Monarch ever selected in the draft. He was the second overall pick of the first round by Detroit.

June 4, 2004: Steve Martin named new wrestling coach.

July 19, 2004: Jerry Meyers named new baseball coach.

August, 2004: ODU Alumni Charlie Ogletree (sailing), Marina DiGiacomo (Argentina F.Hockey), and Macha van der Vaart (Netherlands F.Hockey) earn medals at the Olympics in Athens, Greece.

June 6, 2005: Anna Tunnicliffe named Collegiate Women’s sailor of the Year.

Sept., 28, 2005: Alex Loughton named third team pre-season All-American by Street & Smith’s magazine.

Nov. 4, 2006: Women’s Soccer wins CAA Tournament and advances to first ever NCAA Tournament

Nov. 18, 2006: Men’s Soccer advances to third round of NCAA Tournament for first time in program history

Dec. 4, 2006: Two fall first team All-Americans in Edson Elcock (Men’s Soccer) and Caroline Nichols (Field Hockey)

Feb. 7, 2007: Bobby Wilder hired as the school’s first football coach since 1940

Mar. 11, 2007: Women’s Basketball wins 16th consecutive year CAA title

Sept. 29, 2007: Folkes Stevens Indoor Tennis Center opens with 8 indoor courts and 16 outdoor courts

Oct. 12, 2007: Football season ticket applications available and over 2,700 orders placed in first day

Nov. 18, 2007: Men’s Soccer wins CAA title in penalty kicks; advances to third round of NCAA Tournament

Mar. 16, 2008: Women’s Basketball wins 17th consecutive and final CAA title

Sept. 13, 2008: L.R. Hill Sports Complex is completed, with two football practice fields and a field hockey/lacrosse stadium

Oct. 18, 2008: Women’s Rowing begins first competitive season

Mar. 21, 2009: Ryan Williams finishes second at 141 pounds at the NCAA Championships

Sept. 4, 2009: First ODU football game in 69 years vs. Chowan at Foreman Field; ODU wins, 36-21

Nov. 21, 2009: Football posts 8-3 record in first season, the best startup record of any program in FCS history

Dec. 28, 2015: Rick Lovato becomes first Monarch to play in the NFL, making seven snaps for the Green Bay Packers in week 15 against the Arizona Cardinals. Lovato played in four games for the Packers in 2015.

March 18, 2016: Chris Mecate becomes ODU’s first back-to-back All-American in 40 years with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships.
