NORFOLK, Va. -- Head coach Karen Barefoot and the Old Dominion women’s basketball program announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.
Twins Janae and Janeen Camp, Dejah Carter and Dazia Powell are all set to join the Lady Monarchs for the 2017-18 season.
“We are ecstatic about this signing class,” said Barefoot. “I believe we really hit a home run with this group, as this class contains everything from size to versatility to scoring to rebounding to leadership. Overall, these four players, who were all recruited by Power 5 schools, are going to make our team longer, stronger and bigger. This class, which includes three in-state players, will have a tremendous impact on our program.”
Janae Camp is a 6-4 forward from Portsmouth, Virginia. Janae attends TPLS Academy in Richmond and averaged 11.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 2.1 blocks per game as a junior last season.
"I got recruited by a ton a schools, but I loved ODU and Coach Barefoot," said Janae. "It's home for me."
Janae is ranked the No. 3 power forward in the DMV by NextSportsPhenom and helped her club team, BWSL Richmond, to two AAU Virginia state championships.
“Janae Camp is going to be a very versatile player for us,” said Barefoot. “At 6-4, she has great size for the wing position and has the ability to really score the basketball, as she can score from inside and out. Janae has a lot of potential and is working very hard to transfer to the wing position.”
Janeen Camp, the twin sister of Janae, is a 6-5 center from Portsmouth and also plays her high school ball at TPLS Academy. Last year, as a junior, Janeen averaged a double-double with 12.1 points and 13.0 rebounds, while also averaging 3.5 blocks and 2.3 steals.

Janeen is ranked in the top 25 at her position nationally by ASGR and is the No. 2 post player in the DMV, per NextSportsPhenom. She was a NISAA First Team All-Conference selection last season and plays club for BWSL Richmond.
“Janeen Camp is going to make an impact on the game of women’s basketball,” said Barefoot. “This is a tremendous get for us. She has the potential to be an elite center at the collegiate level with her combination of size, scoring, rebounding and shot-blocking.”
Dejah Carter, a 6-4 forward from Chesterfield, Virginia, attends Cosby High School in Midlothian and averaged 12.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game last season. She also recorded her first triple-double last season with a 22-point, 29-rebound and 13-block effort.
“For the passion, pride and the honor, I chose ODU,” said Carter.
Carter is ranked in the top 30 nationally at her position by ASGR and was a first team all-conference and second team all-region selection last year. Carter plays club for BWSL Richmond and is teammates with the Camp twins.
“Dejah Carter is a great add to our frontcourt,” said Barefoot. “She has great size, a nice mid-range game and truly fits the identity of this team. Dejah has a tremendous work ethic and is a very good defender, and has also shown incredible leadership abilities.”
Dazia Powell, a 5-10 guard frm Raleigh, North Carolina, rounds out the four-player class. Powell, playing for Millbrook High School, averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season, helping the team to a NCHSAA 4A State Championship. She was also named the Most Outstanding Player for the championship game.
“It feels great to be committed to a great program and even greater coaching staff,” said Powell. “I love Coach Barefoot. She’s so energetic and positive. She’s always motivating and pushing to strive for the best and to be great.”
Powell is ranked in the top 30 at her position nationally by both ASGR and espnW and was a first team All-Metro and second team All-State selection last season. She plays club for both Hoop Dreams Athletics and NC Zoom.
“Dazia Powell is an exciting signing for us,” said Barefoot. “She is a tenacious and scrappy defender, but what really stands out is she can really score the basketball. Dazia is an overall elite player and brings intangibles that you just can’t teach.”
