NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University athletics had four teams earn a 100% graduation success rate score in the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate report released by the NCAA. Men’s Tennis, Field Hockey, Women’s Golf and Women’s Tennis all received perfect marks.
All ODU student athletes who entered the university in the 2006-2009 cohort graduated at a rate of 82% over a six-year period (i.e. 2009-15), the university’s highest percentage since the NCAA started keeping records in 1995, beating out last year’s high of 79%. NCAA Graduation Success Rates (GSR) measure the percentage of first-time, full-time freshman on athletics aid who graduate within six years of entering a four-year institution. It differs from the federal graduation rate in that it takes into account incoming transfers, and does not penalize institutions those who depart in good academic standing.
Additionally, three men’s teams (Basketball, Football, and Tennis) were within one percentage point, or well above the national average in their respective sports, while five women’s teams (Rowing, Field Hockey, Golf, Soccer, and Tennis) were above the national average in their sports.
“Anytime you have impressive academic measures to share, it’s a byproduct of the work of a number of areas. Here at ODU, we’re experiencing new heights of academic success because it’s a priority for President John R. Broderick and Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig, as well as the Coaches,” Senior Associate Athletic Director Randale Richmond said. “That support allows the academic staff to demand the very best out of our student-athletes while providing them with the resources and direction to succeed.”
