CLEVELAND -- Old Dominion wrestler Kevin Beazley was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday after posting a 5-0 record en route to a first-place finish at the Southeast Open in Roanoke, Virginia on Sunday.
In his first collegiate tournament since the 2015 NCAAs, the redshirt junior from Howell, Michigan racked up three major decision wins and two decisions over ranked foes.
Beazley's string of victories came against No. 18 Frank Mattiace of Penn, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and Army's 15th-ranked Rocco Caywood, 7-2, in the finals. He claimed first place in a field that included five top-20 ranked wrestlers.
The 197-pound grappler was awarded the honor over five other nominees: Eastern Michigan's Andrew McNally, Northern Illinois' Caden McWhirter, Northern Iowa's Taylor Lujan, Kent State's Anthony Tutolo and Ohio's Noah Forrider.
Beazley, now ranked as high as ninth in the nation, leads the 24th-ranked Monarchs into their first dual meet of the season against No. 3 Missouri this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Ted Constant Center. The Tigers boast two-time NCAA Champion and Olympic bronze medalist J'Den Cox at 197, setting up a top-10 showdown at the weight class.
