PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple Owls scored a goal seven minutes into the first overtime period to upset the No. 13 Old Dominion field hockey team, 2-1 OT, Friday afternoon at Howarth field in Philadelphia. The Lady Monarchs dropped to 6-6, 2-2 (BIG EAST), while Temple improved to 5-8, 2-2 (BIG EAST).

"It's a disappointing and frustrating outcome in the end for us to lose the game after the way we played," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "There were many good things in our play today: we passed the ball, worked well as a unit and controlled 80 percent of the possession. Temple had a very difficult time moving the ball out of their backfield. We had 21 shots and 12 corners, but it was obviously not enough. We need to turn those chances into goals."

Temple got on the board first when Sarah Keer fired a shot into the lower left corner for a goal in the 11th minute. The Owls' Maiyah Brown was credited with the assist.

ODU responded in the 27th minute when Chrissy Horn converted a long, low shot from the top of the circle for her second goal of the season, tying the game, 1-1. Amie Olton was credited with the assist for the Lady Monarchs.

At the half, Old Dominion led Temple in shots, 13-2, and in penalty corner attempts, 9-1.

In the second half, despite six shots from Old Dominion, the score remained deadlocked, 1-1.

Seven minutes into overtime, it was Temple's Rachael Mueller who scored the game-winner to give the Owls the 2-1 OT victory.

For the game, ODU maintained a 21-7 shot advantage and attempted 12 penalty corners to Temple's four.

ODU senior Megan Byas had nine shots including seven on goal, and freshman Erin Huffman had six shots for the game.

Temple goalkeeper Maddie Lillock made nine saves for the Owls, while Kealsie Robles registered one.

"It is a tough loss and difficult to find positives while it is fresh," Griffiths continued. "But we will lean on the hard work we have done in our training and preparation, and we will regroup this week and sharpen our finishing to attack next weekend's games."
