MIAMI, Fla. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (7-11-0, 5-5-0 C-USA) punched its ticket to the 2016 Conference USA Tournament after beating FIU (3-11-3, 2-6-2, C-USA) in the regular season finale by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon. The shutout was the second in three days for the Lady Monarchs.
"I am tremendously proud of this group,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “What resilience we have shown to come up with these two road wins. We needed both of them to make the tournament and to achieve this, especially given the travel and field conditions today, is just fantastic. Credit to all of our players. We get a few days now to recover, prepare and get ready for the Conference tournament but today we get to enjoy the moment."
Sunday’s match was originally scheduled for October 9th, but was wiped out due to Hurricane Matthew.
The Lady Monarchs got on the scoreboard first in the 39th minute, when they capitalized off a failed FIU clearance to take a 1-0 lead on an own goal. At the half, the Panthers held a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots, as ODU held a 5-3 advantage in corners.
The win gives Old Dominion 15 points in league play, which places them in a tie for seventh with UTEP, who holds the tiebreaker over the Lady Monarchs, giving ODU the No. 8 seed in the 2016 C-USA Tournament in Charlotte next week. Old Dominion will play the No. 1 seeded North Texas on Wednesday, November 2nd at 11:00 a.m EST. All tournament matches can be viewed live in HD via C-USA TV.
For the match, Old Dominion out-shot Florida International 10-8, while dominating the corner kick count, 9-3. Krista Moisio made one save in her 90 minutes of work in goal for ODU. FIU’s Sophia Trujillo was credited with four saves.
