Lady Monarchs Drop Heartbreaker to Providence, 1-0 OT

NORFOLK, Va. -- Providence's Mary O'Reilly tapped in a shot from Adrienne Houle with five minutes left in the first overtime period to deal the Old Dominion field hockey team a heartbreaking 1-0 OT loss at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex Friday afternoon. Providence improved to 13-5, 5-2 (BIG EAST) while the Lady Monarchs fell to 7-9, 3-4 (BIG EAST).

The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock despite the Lady Monarchs firing off 12 shots to the Friars' three. ODU also held an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners at the break.

Providence goalkeeper Megan Guilbert registered four saves for Providence in the first half, while Kealsie Robles made two in the cage for ODU.

In the second half, Providence attempted six shots to Old Dominion's five, though neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Heading into overtime, the Lady Monarchs maintained a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners and a 17-9 advantage in shots.

The Lady Monarchs came out strong in the first overtime period, taking four shots early on, but Providence capitalized on a penalty corner with just over five minutes left, as Mary O'Reilly tapped in a shot from Adrienne Houle to clinch the BIG EAST victory for the Friars.

For the game, ODU led 21-10 in shots and 10-8 in penalty corners. Senior Meg Byas had five shots while Amie Olton, Danielle Grega and Rebecca Birch each attempted three.

Kealsie Robles made three saves in the cage for Old Dominion.
