CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team fell to No. 12 Virginia, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at University Hall Turf Field. UVA improved to 8-4, 2-1 (ACC), while the Lady Monarchs dropped to 6-4, 2-1 (BIG EAST).
"Although the result was disappointing, there are some promising things to take from the game today," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "We moved better as a team and had better support around the ball. We didn't have our best day as far as skills go and missed some good opportunities to create goal scoring chances, but our structure is improving with each game and that's going to put us in a position to win games going forward."
The Cavaliers got on the board in the ninth minute, as Riley Tata scored off an assist from Tara Vittese to put UVA up, 1-0.
Virginia carried the 1-0 lead into the locker rooms at the half while also holding a 6-2 shot advantage over Old Dominion.
In the 46th minute, UVA's leading scorer Tara Vittese made the most of a penalty stroke attempt, tacking on her seventh gooal of the season and helping the Cavaliers complete the 2-0 win.
Kealsie Robles played all 70 minutes in the cage for ODU, registering three saves.
