WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (2-5-0) fell to undefeated Wake Forest (7-0-0) by a 3-1 score after three unanswered goals by the Demon Deacons on Friday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons received 31 votes in the most recent NSCAA Coaches’ Poll.

Wake Forest went a total of 502 minutes without allowing a goal until Iris Achterhof scored just 2:20 into the match, giving Old Dominion an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Achterhof’s second goal of the season. The goal was also only the second that Wake Forest has allowed in seven matches so far this year, the last being in its season opener on August 19th.

"I thought we started off brightly and scored a fantastic early goal from Iris' strike,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “After they tied the game up, we had a spell where we were under a bit of pressure which resulted in them getting the go ahead goal just minutes before the half. That was disappointing from our perspective.”

Just two minutes later, Wake Forest answered with a goal from Maddie Huster, assisted by Caroline Wooten to tie the match, 1-1.

Two minutes before halftime, the Demon Deacons took a 2-1 advantage after Bayley Feist finished a Sarah Medina pass. ODU goalkeeper Krista Moisio compiled four first half saves.

In the 67th minute, Jenna Romano scored her second goal of the season to give Wake Forest a 3-1 lead and ultimately victory on Friday night.

Hind continued, “In the second half, we came out well and matched them and were beginning to look more positive in our ability to go at them. Then to lose the third goal, at that time and in that manner, gave us just too much to do. Again, we did well for long spells and competed with them but we simply need to irradiate these individual mistakes, with the level of teams we play, it costs us and we need to learn.”

For the match, the Demon Deacons held advantages in shots (19-6), as well as corners (5-2).

The Lady Soccer Monarchs will remain on the road for their next match on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m. against C-USA foe Charlotte. Old Dominion will return home on Friday, Sept. 23 for its Conference USA opener against Florida Atlantic at 7:00 p.m.
