NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior Casey Dolan tapped in a diving shot past the Delaware keeper in the first overtime period to power the No. 20 ODU field hockey team over No. 14 Delaware, 3-2 OT, Friday evening at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs improved to 2-1 (0-0 BIG EAST) on the season while Delaware dropped to 2-1 (0-0 CAA).
In the 27th minute, freshman Erin Huffman struck first for the Lady Monarchs for her second goal of the season to give ODU a 1-0 lead. Alyssa Jones was credited with the assist off the penalty corner.
The Lady Monarchs carried the 1-0 advantage into the locker rooms at the half, as they also outshot Delaware 4-1 and held a 3-0 advantage in corners.
Old Dominion freshman Rebecca Birch extended the lead to 2-0 when she found the back of the net in the 43rd minute off an assist from Ashleigh Thomas.
Delaware stormed back late in the second half, as Kiki Bink scored in the 54th minute and Alexis Gazzio scored off a corner in the 70th minute to tie the game, 2-2.
Seven minutes into the first overtime period, an oustretched Casey Dolan poked in the game winning shot past Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans to complete the upset over the 14th-ranked Blue Hens.
