NORFOLK, Va. – Niko Klosterhalfen led the Monarchs with two goals while Sebastien Hauret added three assists to lift Old Dominion over UNLV 3-1 in its home opener Friday night, August 26, at the ODU Soccer Complex. Both athletes were named co-Men of the Match, a new honor decided by Head Coach Alan Dawson, which is bestowed to the most outstanding player(s) of the game.
Old Dominion got on the board first in the 12th minute on an outside pass from Hauret to Klosterhalfen from 18-yards out [12:02]. Danny Musovski tied the match at one all off the long pass inside from Shota Takada with 22:41 on the clock. The Monarchs reclaimed the lead in the 40th minute [40:24] when Hauret connected with Tyler Edwards in front of the goal to go up 2-1 heading into halftime.
Klosterhalfen and Hauret connected for the second time of the night [55:23], giving the Monarchs the 3-1 lead and resulting ultimately in the final score.
Alex Tiesenhausen collected five saves allowing one goal through 90 minutes in net for the Monarchs picking up the win. Nathan Bohm received his first loss of the season as he recorded five saves on the night and giving up all three goals.
ODU led the stats line with 16 shots to UNLV’s 12, while the Rebels held the slight edge in corner kicks, 6-5. Klosterhalfen led with five shots, while Edwards contributed four more. Jesse Miralrio (3), Hauret (2), Cole Stringer (1) and CJ Taylor (1) recored the remaining seven shots for the Silver and Blue.
The Monarchs return to the field on Sunday, August 28, as they host the Hatters of Stetson in their first “Sunday Dog Days” match of the season. First kick is set for 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game and cheer on the Monarchs.
