NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (1-2) fell to VCU (1-2) by a 2-1 score on Thursday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Lady Monarchs had their 1-0 lead at halftime wiped away by two unanswered second half Rams' goals.
ODU got on the scoreboard first in the 42nd minute off an Iris Achterhof corner kick, in which the VCU goalkeeper bumped it into her net for an own goal, giving the Lady Soccer Monarchs a 1-0 lead heading into the locker rooms at the half.
In the first 45 minutes of play, Old Dominion held a 6-3 advantage in shots and took the games only two corners.
VCU tied the match, 1-1, in the 51st minute, when Natalie Robles headed in an Amanda Hallesjo corner. The goal was Robles first of the season.
In the 79th minute, the Rams scored off another corner, this time off an ODU deflection which led to Sarah Gibson heading in an Ingrid Brouwer assist to give VCU a one-goal advantage and ultimately a 2-1 victory on Thursday night in Norfolk.
For the match, Old Dominion held a 13-9 advantage in shots, while VCU led the corner kick tally, 5-2. ODU’s Krista Moisio compiled three saves in 90 minutes of work.
The Lady Soccer Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 28, when they travel to Charlottesville to take on No. 4 nationally ranked Virginia at 2:00 p.m.
