NORFOLK, Va. -- The L.R. Hill Sports Complex, the home field of the Old Dominion field hockey and women's lacrosse programs, is undergoing a new state-of-the-art turf installment. The synthetic turf field will ensure an optimal playing surface for both teams throughout their respective seasons and for the NCAA Field Hockey semifinals at ODU this fall.

The new field at the L.R. Hill will be the AstroTurf 90 product, which combines the traditional knitted nylon top cloth with a 3/8th inch rubber pad underneath. AstroTurf fields have long been regarded as the clear-cut standard for performance and are sought after for their playability, durability and low maintenance requirements. The knitted nylon surface is unique to AstroTurf and is preferred because it provides tight tolerances, non-directional play and a uniform surface.

The new turf will occupy the same area, minus the needed space for the L.R. Hill expansion, which has been accounted for. There will be ample run off space, which leaves optimal area off the boundary lines for other activities, as well as provide space for the teams. The new field will also feature a blue border and Old Dominion logos along the outside of the field.

The removal of the old turf, which began on May 31, has been completed. The new turf installment is set to begin in mid-July, once the it is run through the manufacturing process, and should be completed by early August prior to the field hockey season.
