SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Old Dominion University Sailing sits in first place after the first day of the Gill Coed Eastern Semifinals held in San Diego.

The Monarchs are in first place with a total score of 51 points, seven points ahead of second place St. Mary's. The top nine teams in the two semifinals advance to the finals.

The Division A boat of Esteban Forrer and Gabriel Smith sailed to a third place spot after day one. In the six races completed, the team finished in the top five in all but one, recording a high finish of second.

The Division B squad of Augie Dale and Kaylie Gallagher are a top the division with a score of 17 points, 10 ahead of second place St. Mary's. The 17 points was the second best score of the Eastern Semifinal, second only to a 16 scored by the Division A team of South Florida.

“We sailed pretty solidly. We were able to turn some tough races around and that’s what we were looking to be able to do," ODU Head Coach Mitch Brindley said. "We will keep plugging away and take what we learned today and apply it to racing tomorrow."
