Old Dominion Soars Past William & Mary, 7-1

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion baseball team broke its three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over old CAA rival William & Mary on Wednesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The win marked the Monarchs 20th of the season, as ODU now holds a 20-10 overall record.

Nick Walker led the way with a 2-for-2 outing with two runs and one RBI. Turner Bishop also went 1-for-3, which included a double and a team leading 2 RBIs. Nick Hartman earned the win after pitching a spotless three innings. After facing nine batters, Hartman fanned four and forced three fly outs and two groundouts.

The Monarchs put three runs up in the first inning to take an early lead, one that the team would never relinquish. Walker led off with a double to left field and advanced to third after Kurt Sinnen grounded out to the first baseman. Connor Myers then walked and gave Bishop the chance to score two runs off a double down the right field line. Jason McMurray scored Bishop for the final run off a single up the middle (3-0).

ODU scored two more runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead over the Tribe. William & Mary scored its only run of the contest in the fifth inning off a sacrifice fly from Tim Hoehn. The Monarchs responded with one more in the bottom of the fifth off of two errors from the W&M second baseman to hold a 6-0 advantage.

Old Dominion's final run of the contest was scored off a sacrifice fly from Walker to score Lustrino from third base. The win marked ODU’s eighth win over the Tribe since head coach Chris Finwood took over the program. Overall, the Monarchs hold an 8-3 edge in the series.

Cullen Large went 2-for-4 for the Tribe, scoring the only run for William & Mary. Michael Toner suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs in the first inning.
