FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Old Dominion women's golf team wrapped up day one of the Conference USA Championships held at the Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Florida in a tie for third place with Southern Miss. Katerina Vlasinova fired a one-over 73 in the opening round and currently sits in fifth place out of 55 golfers.
Returning C-USA champion and top-seeded Middle Tennessee closed out the opening round in first place, collectively firing a 296. FIU is three strokes behind in second place with 299 while the Lady Monarchs and Southern Miss are tied for third with 300.
Individually, Valentina Haupt from Southern Miss is in first place after shooting a two-under 70, while Sophie Godley from FIU is in second place. Vlasinova, who shot a 73 in round one, is tied for fifth with Meghan MacLaren from FIU and Katie Story of Western Kentucky. ODU's Sana Tufail fired a 74 and is tied for eighth, and Rachel Walker shot a 76 and is tied for 17th.
The Lady Monarchs lead the 11-team field in par three scoring average (3.00) through one round and are tied for second for most birdies with 11.
Vlasinova leads all 55 golfers with six birdies to her credit while Tufail is tied for second-lowest par three scoring average (2.75).
The ODU women's golf team picks the clubs back up tomorrow at 8 a.m. for the second round of action.
