NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion baseball team will take to the field on Tuesday against the VMI Keydets for the third time this season, this time in Lexington, Va. for a 6 p.m. start. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The meeting between these two teams marks the 56th all-time meeting and the third of the 2016 season. ODU defeated the Keydets twice in Norfolk, 8-2 and 6-5, putting its series lead to 44-11. The two wins also moved the Monarchs winning streak over VMI to five straight games. Under head coach Chris Finwood, Old Dominion is 12-1 over his alma mater.
The Monarchs are currently on a two-game losing streak after falling to the UTSA Roadrunners twice this weekend. ODU suffered its second shutout of the season on Saturday (3-0) and fell by a 7-2 margin on Sunday. The Monarchs dropped to No. 48 in the latest NCAA RPI release following the two losses, however, Conference USA still has four teams in the top 50. So far this season, ODU has faced five teams rated in the top 50, with NC State being the highest at No. 6.
ODU is hitting .258 as a team and is led by a .331 batting average from Connor Myers. Myers is one of two Conference USA players to lead his team in batting average (.331), hits (48) and RBI (24). Danny Hudzina from WKU is the only other player to achieve that feat. To take it a bit further, Myers is the only player in the conference to lead his team in those categories and lead his team in runs (33), as Hudzina sits in second for the Hilltoppers. Nick Walker also hits above .300 with a .308 average and ranks first in the league and 13th in the nation in sacrifice flies.
The VMI Keydets enter the matchup with a 17-23 overall record after falling in the final game in the weekend series against the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga. Jacob Jaye homered and drove in both of VMI's runs, but Kyle Lewis went deep and had five RBI as the Mercer Bears defeated the Keydets, 7-2, in the finale. Mercer (22-15, 8-4) had led from the bottom of the first on, but the Keydets (17-23, 2-10) trimmed the deficit to 3-2 headed to the bottom of the seventh. Micah Gorman relieved and walked Matt Meeder with one out. Lewis then followed with a two-run home run to right center to make it a 5-2 game. Mercer then added two more runs in the eighth to account for the final margin.
On the mound, Brandon Barbery (3-5) took the loss as he allowed three runs over 3 2/3 innings. Offensively, Jaye went 2 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Keydets.
