Lacrosse Hosts First-Year Program VCU Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. -- Following a three-game road stretch, the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team returns to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex to host first-year program VCU on Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m.

Old Dominion (6-2) is coming off of consecutive wins over American and George Washington, both in Washington, D.C. Last weekend, the Lady Monarchs defeated GW, 10-7, as four different players scored two goals. 

The 6-2 start is tied for the second-best start in team history. The Lady Monarchs also got off to a 6-2 start in 2002, 2003, 2009 and last year in 2015. The best team start in team history was a 6-1 start in 1980.

Ashmore Standing leads ODU in scoring this season with a total of 32 points, including 28 goals. Standing also leads the Atlantic Sun in both categories, and her 28 goals rank ninth in the NCAA. Morgan Marrale (9a/8a), Connor Carson (11g/3a) and Megan Topper (5g/6a) have also posted double-digit scoring totals this season.

Defensively, Morgan Gallagher, Missy Koscinski and Natalie Ledwitz have all forced 10 or more turnovers, while Koscinski has also scooped up 18 ground balls. In goal, Maggi Buckley has played all but 10 minutes in goal, posting a 10.10 goals against average and a .444 save percentage.

As a team, the Lady Monarchs lead the Atlantic Sun in win percentage (.750) and caused turnovers per game (12.13). The 12.13 caused turnovers per game also ranks sixth nationally.

VCU (2-5) is coming off of back-to-back losses to a pair of A-Sun opponents in Detroit and Central Michigan. The Rams fell to Detroit, 12-10, and CMU, 6-5. Molly Barcikowski leads the Rams in scoring with 34 points on 17 goals and 17 assists. Sky Hyatt also has 17 goals on the year.

The teams share three common opponents so far this season in George Washington, Liberty and Campbell. Both teams defeated GW and Campbell, while ODU defeated Liberty and VCU fell to the Lady Flames.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first all-time meeting between ODU and VCU.

MIDMAJOR LAX POLL
Old Dominion is ranked 22nd in the latest MidMajor Lax Top 25. The Lady Monarchs moved up one spot after being ranked 23rd in last week's poll. The poll ranks the top 25 midmajor teams in the country.

'STANDING' OUT
Senior Ashmore Standing ranks fourth all-time in ODU history in career goals (135) and fifth in points (167). 2015 ODU Sports Hall of Fame inductee and three-time All-American Suzanne Wosczyna holds the school record in both categories (206 goals, 325 points).

WEEKLY HONORS
Three different Lady Monarchs have been garnered Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors this season. Connor Carson became only the third player in A-Sun history to win both Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season. Additionally, Ashmore Standing and Maggi Buckley have each received a weekly award.

PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
A total of four Lady Monarchs were named to the preaseason All-Atlantic Sun team, voted on by the coaches. Goalkeeper Maggi Buckley, defender Morgan Gallagher, midfielder Connor Carson and attacker Ashmore Standing all earned the honor. Defender Missy Koscinski and attacker Morgan Marrale were both named to the preseason watch list. As a team, ODU was selected to finish second behind reigning champ Jacksonville.
