IRVING, Texas – Old Dominion men’s basketball senior Trey Freeman has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week for games through Feb. 6, becoming the first player to ever win the award three weeks in a row. Freeman poured in a career-high 38 points to lead the Monarchs to a thrilling win at Charlotte on Saturday, after draining a contested game-tying three-pointer with just nine seconds remaining in regulation to send the ballgame into overtime.
His 38-point performance on Saturday is the most by any Monarch since 2003, when Alex Loughton dropped 45 on Charlotte in double-overtime.
Freeman maintains his spot atop the C-USA scoring chart at 21.3 points per game for the season, which ranks 16th in the country. In Conference USA play, he is averaging an astonishing 27.8 points per game.
The senior captain from Virginia Beach, Va. has scored 21 or more points in each of the past 10 games, including 24 or more points in the past eight contests, and has been the game’s leading scorer in the past nine games. Freeman’s eight-straight games of 24 points or more is the longest such streak in the country this season. He is now just 43 points shy of recording 2,000 for his career.
Against Florida Atlantic on Jan. 28, Freeman recorded his 1,000th point in an ODU uniform, which only took just over a season a half worth of games to accomplish. Freeman now has his Monarchs on a three-game winning streak.
The award is Freeman’s fourth of his career, as he also claimed the honor last season on March 3, 2015. The award is chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools.
