CHARLOTTE N.C. – ODU redshirt senior guard Trey Freeman poured in a career high of 38 points and drilled a contested three-pointer with nine seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime, where the Old Dominion men's basketball team (13-10, 6-4 C-USA) took down Charlotte (7-15, 4-6 C-USA) by a 74-69 score on Saturday night at Halton Arena. Freeman’s 38 points is the most by any Monarch since Alex Loughton dropped 45 in a double-overtime loss against Charlotte on Dec. 6, 2003.

Charlotte rallied back from a 10-point second half deficit to take a lead late in regulation, but Freeman’s three pointer at the end of regulation forced overtime, where the Monarchs outscored the 49ers, 9-4. The Monarchs are now on a three-game winning-streak.

ODU’s Brandan Stith went for a double-double, netting 14 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Old Dominion led for a total of 41:04, while Charlotte held a lead for 3:23. The Monarchs defense held Charlotte to 26.9% (7-26) shooting from the floor in the first half and 22.9% (2-9) in overtime.

Charlotte’s Braxton Ogbueze’s made three-pointer tied the contest at 60 all with 1:45 remaining in regulation. Aaron Bacote then answered with a mid-range jumper to give ODU a two-point lead, 62-60.

Charlotte then went on a 5-0 run to claim a 65-62 advantage, before Freeman tied the game up, forcing overtime. ODU scored the first four points of the extra period on its way to claiming a thrilling five point victory on Saturday in Charlotte.

Joseph Uchebo led four 49ers in double-figures with 18 points and 19 rebounds. Braxton Ogbueze, Jon Davis and Curran Scott each scored 15 points, respectively. The 49ers entered Saturday’s contest winners of four of their last five contests.

Trey Freeman outscored Charlotte 9-6 with 11:59 to play in the first half, as the Monarchs led the 49ers, 13-6. At one point, Charlotte missed 10 consecutive shots while on a scoring drought that lasted 7:08, as ODU led 25-12 with 2:59 left in the opening half.

Old Dominion held a 27-17 advantage heading into the locker rooms at halftime. Freeman led all scorers with 19. ODU outrebounded Charlotte 23-15 in the first half, as well as outscored the 49ers in the paint, 18-8, in the opening 20 minutes.
