NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 10-7 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

The win is Old Dominion's first over Virginia Tech (5-3) since 1997. The Hokies had won the previous seven matchups.

Ashmore Standing and Cydney Tutchton led the Lady Monarchs with two goals apiece, while Morgan Marrale contributed a goal and two assists and Megan Topper added a goal and an assist. In goal, Maggi Buckley earned the win for ODU, tallying 12 saves, while conceding just seven goals.

"This was a big team win," said Buckley. "Both our defense and offense were on fire. We both worked together and our main goal today was to work in the midfield and to work on pressuring them when they had the ball."

The Hokies opened the scoring with a free position goal just six minutes into the game, but the Lady Monarchs responded, rattling off four unanswered goals late in the first half to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

The Lady Monarchs continued that momentum into the second half, as Standing netted an unassisted goal just two minutes into the half. After a Tech goal, ODU used three consecutive goals from Megan Cameron, Natalie Ledwitz and Connor Carson to extend the margin to five goals at 10-5.

The ODU defense would then hold strong for the final 14 minutes, conceding just two goals over that span. Defensively, the Lady Monarchs were led by Ledwitz, who caused three turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Morgan Gallagher and Kerri Caruso also forced two turnovers apiece.

The Hokies were led by Tristan McGinley and Meghan Macera, who each scored two goals.

"This is awesome," said Buckley. "Two years ago, during my freshman year, we lost by one and that was such a hard loss. So, we're 3-0 now and it's just great. Everyone is so excited and working well together as team. It's amazing. No words can describe this feeling."

Old Dominion has now opened the season with a 3-0 record in back-to-back seasons.
