NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team opens the 2016 season on Wednesday, Feb. 17, with a road match at Longwood at 3 p.m. at the Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Virginia.

Old Dominion (0-0) is coming off of a 13-5 season in its first year in the Atlantic Sun. The 13 wins tied a program record for single-season victories. The Lady Monarchs return eight starters from last year, including three all-conference selections in Connor Carson, Morgan Gallagher and Ashmore Standing. Carson (39g/7a in 2015) and Standing (52g/20a) were also two of ODU's top three scorers a season ago.
Longwood (0-2) has opened the season with back-to-back losses to Navy, 15-5, and Elon, 15-8. Sarah Butler leads the Lancers in scoring through two games with three goals and four assists.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the eighth all-time meeting between Old Dominion and Longwood. ODU currently leads the series, 4-3, including a 19-7 win last year in Norfolk. In that game, Connor Carson scored four goals for ODU, while Ashmore Standing added two goals and two assists. The teams first met in 2009.
ALL-TIME IN SEASON OPENERS
Old Dominion is 15-20 all-time in season openers, including a 2-2 mark under Heather Holt. Last year, the Lady Monarchs toppled Gardner-Webb in the season opener, 22-1.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Morgan Gallagher and Connor Carson have been named team captains for this week. ODU will have weekly team captains for the 2016 season. Captains are named on each Monday and the honor is given to those who have been leaders for the program both on and off the field.
