ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 57 Old Dominion women’s tennis team (1-2) fell to the No. 4 nationally ranked team in the country, Georgia (2-0) by a 4-0 score on Sunday in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of UGA.
Four of Georgia’s six singles players are nationally ranked. On Court No. 2, ODU freshman Nataliya Vlasova had No. 22 Caroline Brinson (UGA) on the ropes, before the match was stopped (4-6, 6-1, 5-3).
In No. 3 singles, ODU’s Ingrid Vojcinakova won the second set 6-1 against No. 82 Silvia Garcia (UGA) and was leading in the third set 6-5 when the match came to a halt (6-1, 1-6, 5-6).
Adriana Rajkovic battled Georgia’s No. 109 Kennedy Shaffer in what turned out to be a tight three-setter that Shaffer ultimately claimed victory (6-2, 2-6, 6-2).
This weekend’s marked the first two match of a seven-match road swing for Old Dominion. Next, ODU will battle Penn on Sat., Jan. 30 at 12:00 p.m. and then Temple on Sun., Jan 31 at 10:00 a.m. Both match will take place in Philadelphia, Penn.
The weekend's action was part of the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Georgia now receives a berth into the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc. from Feb. 5-8.
Sixty women’s tennis programs competed in the eighth annual ITA Kickoff Weekend across the country this weekend. In order to qualify for the tournament teams need to have finished the previous season ranked within the top 75. The Lady Tennis Monarchs finished the 2015 season nationally ranked No. 56 by the ITA, which is the highest season-end ranking for the program since the 2001 season. Old Dominion finished the 2015 year with a 16-6 overall record, which included wins over nationally ranked No. 61 VCU (4-3) and No. 48 ranked Marshall (7-0).
