LANCASTER, Pa. -- ODU freshman Steven Simpson reeled off four straight wins through the consolation bracket after dropping his opening bout at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open at Millersville to claim third place in the 125 lb. bracket. Fellow Monarch freshman Jaquan Loney placed in the first collegiate tournament of his young career, taking fourth at 133.
After falling to Binghamton’s Joseph Nelson, 6-5, in the first round, Simpson stormed back through the wrestlebacks, earning a fall, tech. fall and two major decisions to capture third place. In his final match of the day, Simpson avenged his first round loss to Nelson, winning in dominant fashion, 20-10.
The Monarchs’ Jaquan Loney, a freshman from Kissimmee, Florida, opened the day with two consecutive victories to reach the semifinals at 133. After losing to Lehigh’s two-time All-American Mason Beckman, Loney defeated Harvard’s Ryan Friedman for the second time of the day, 11-4. Loney lost his third place match to Army West Point’s Justin Seim to grab fourth.
Also competing at the event were Josh Markham, who went 3-2 at 141, Kenan Carter, who went 2-2 at 149, Shane Jones, who went 1-2 at 149, and Kaleab Fethai, who went 0-2 at 174.

ODU hosts Northern Iowa tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Ted Constant Center to start the MAC dual meet slate.
