NORFOLK, Va. -- Two Lady Monarch field hockey players were selected to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State team, as announced by the organization on Friday afternoon.
Junior defender Catalina Barahona was named to the first team, while senior midfielder Sarah Breen was selected to the second team.
Barahona was the only Lady Monarch to pick up first team honors after leading the defense to three shutouts and a 1.74 goals-against average. She topped the conference rankings with three defensive saves, which also ranked 24th in the nation. During the season, she dished out six assists and scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Wake Forest. She also earned All-BIG EAST First Team and Second Team Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region honors this season.
Breen led the team with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists during her senior campaign and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in goals scored. Breen capped the season by earning All-BIG EAST First Team laurels, marking her fourth career conference award and her third first team selection. She also earned her fourth-consecutive all-region nod and her third Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American selection after earning second team honors. Over her four seasons with ODU, she notched 104 points on 44 goals and 16 assists.
Tara Vittese from Virginia was named the Player of the Year, while the head coach of the Cavaliers Michele Madison was selected as the Coach of the Year. Melissa Wilken from James Madison was also tabbed as the state’s Rookie of the Year.
In total, seven different teams were represented across the first and second teams: James Madison (5), Liberty (4), Virginia (4), William & Mary (3), Richmond (3), Old Dominion (2) and Longwood (1).
