RALEIGH, N.C. -- In a battle of top-10 programs, the Old Dominion wrestling team (2-2) will head to Raleigh, North Carolina for a dual meet against NC State (10-0) on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The Monarchs enter Thursday’s showdown ranked as high as No. 10 while the Wolfpack comes in at No. 3.
The Monarchs enter Thursday’s matchup coming off a heartbreaking 19-18 loss in the home opener against North Carolina on Sunday. Emilio Saavedra registered a fall in his first match at the Ted Constant Center, No. 2 Chris Mecate received a forfeit, No. 4 Alexander Richardson earned a 9-5 decision and No. 2 Jack Dechow defeated No. 19 Alex Utley, 2-1 OT.
NC State is off to a strong start, racking up a 10-0 dual meet record on the year so far. The Wolfpack earned a 19-15 victory over then-No. 4 Oklahoma State on the road on Dec. 6 and recently cruised past Grand Canyon by a 35-3 score.
Among several nationally ranked wrestlers, NC State boasts two-time NCAA Champion and No. 1 ranked 285-pounder Nick Gwiazdowski. Kevin Jack, a sophomore at 141, placed fifth at the NCAA Championships a season ago and is currently ranked No. 2. Additionally, Thomas Gantt and Max Rohskopf are ranked within the top 10 at 157 and 165, respectively.
Next up for the Monarchs is the 53rd Annual Midlands Championships at Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Competition will begin Tuesday, Dec. 29 and will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
