NORFOLK, Va. -- Despite a valiant effort, the Old Dominion field hockey team dropped a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to top-seeded UConn on Friday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

Danielle Grega scored a pair of goals for ODU and Megan Byas tallied three assists. Freshman Chrissy Horn added the other Monarch goal.

UConn (19-0) went ahead just 39 seconds into the game, as Charlotte Veitner found the back of the net for the Huskies. However, ODU (9-10) answered in the 17th minute when Grega deflected in a corner shot. UConn's Anna Middendorf then added a goal to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead heading into half.

In the second half, UConn once again scored early as Veitner tallied her second goal of the match to put the Huskies up by two goals.

Just minutes later, Horn scored off of a penalty corner to bring the Monarchs back within one. UConn went back up by two goals at the 56:02 mark when Casey Umstead scored off of a penalty stroke.

Grega tallied her second goal of the match with less than six minutes remaining, but the Monarchs could not find the equalizer.

Overall, ODU held a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Kealsie Robles tallied four saves in net for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs' three goals were the most UConn has allowed this season.
