Monarchs Top CNU in Exhibition, 85-43

NORFOLK, Va. -- Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Old Dominion basketball team defeated Christopher Newport, 85-43, in exhibition play on Thursday night at the Ted Constant Center.

The Monarchs jumped out to an early 29-6 lead and never looked back. ODU held a 44-17 advantage at halftime and led by double digits for all but the first five minutes of the game.   

A total of five Monarchs reached double figures, led by Ahmad Caver who tallied a team-high 15 points. Caver also added six rebounds and four assists. Trey Freeman, last year’s Conference USA Newcomer of the Year, finished the game with 12 points and seven boards, while Stephen Vassor contributed 11 points.

Aaron Bacote and Payton Pervier also reached double digits, finishing with 10 points apiece. As a team, the Monarchs shot 56.9 percent from the field.

Defensively, ODU was just as dominant, holding Christopher Newport to 27.5 percent shooting and 11.5 percent from beyond the three-point line. Aaron McFarland and Marcus Carter led the Captains with 10 points each. 

Overall, the Monarchs held a 49-29 rebound advantage, while turning the ball over just eight times.
