GILROY, Calif. --
The Old Dominion wrestling team (0-1) will head out west to California for a double-dual meet with San Francisco State and Cal Poly on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Monarchs, ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation, will take on San Francisco State at 6 p.m. EST and then will battle Cal Poly at 9 p.m. at Gilroy High School, a neutral location approximately 150 miles north of Cal Poly’s campus and 80 miles south of San Francisco.

The Monarchs are coming off a 21-16 season-opening loss to No. 23 Virginia last Sunday. Chris Mecate, Alexander Richardson, Seldon Wright and Jack Dechow all recorded wins for ODU in the dual meet.

As a team, the Monarchs enter Saturday’s matchups ranked as high as No. 12 in the polls, and four individuals are ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes:

·         Brandon Jeske - No. 19 at 125

·         Chris Mecate - No. 2 at 141

·         Alexander Richardson - No. 4 at 149

·         Jack Dechow - No. 5 at 184

Division II standout San Francisco State (0-1) enters Saturday’s dual meet after a strong performance last weekend at the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, California where three Gators placed top-six in their respective weight classes. Johnny Costa and Sam Alnassiri placed fifth at 184 and 285, respectively, while Tavis Ino took sixth at 165.

In its only dual action of the season so far, San Francisco State fell to Cal Poly, 29-8, on Nov. 7 at the “Grapple in the Plaza,” the program’s first ever outdoor dual meet. Picking up major decision wins for the Gators were heavyweight Sam Alnassiri and 133-pounder Jordan Gurrola.

Cal Poly (1-2) heads into Saturday night’s dual meet after placing 10 wrestlers at the Roadrunner Open last weekend. JT Goodwin captured the 197-pound title after pinning Cal State Bakersfield’s No. 14 Reuben Franklin in just 57 seconds. Goodwin leads Cal Poly with a perfect 7-0 record with four falls to date.

In dual meet action, the Mustangs recently suffered a 28-12 loss at the hands of Drexel, defeated San Francisco State, 29-8, at the “Grapple in the Plaza” and fell to Stanford, 35-6.

After a three-week hiatus, the Monarchs will be back in action for their home-opener against No. 14 North Carolina at the Ted Constant Center on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
