NOFOLK, Va. -- Despite not playing a game in 11 days, the Old Dominion field hockey team cruised past BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Friday night at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs posted their second shutout of the season with a 6-0 win over the Hoyas.
Old Dominion improved to 7-3 overall and claimed its first BIG EAST matchup of the year to hold a 1-0 conference record. Georgetown fell to 5-7 and 0-2 in the league.
Senior Teisha King led the way with two goals and one assist to total five points, marking the highest scoring game in her career. Sophomore Danielle Grega also chipped in two goals, while seniors Sarah Breen and Emily Harting also scored for ODU. Along with King, Catalina Barahona, Megan Byas, Amie Olton and Alex Iqbal notched an assist.
The Lady Monarchs began the match with an attacking mindset, scoring in the first 33 seconds. Iqbal, set up at the top of the circle, found an open King who collected the ball and placed it in the right side of the cage. Grega and Harting would each score for ODU in the first half, with Grega notching her seventh goal of the year and Harting recording her third.
Old Dominion registered 11 shots in the first half and was awarded six penalty corners to hold a 3-0 lead over the Hoyas at the intermission. The defense played as a collective unit, not only holding GU to zero shots, but also keeping the attack out of its offensive circle.
The Lady Monarchs strengthened their charge in the final period, registering 26 shots and 13 penalty corners, which marks the highest in a half in both categories for Old Dominion this season.
Grega opened the second half with her second score of the contest, which gave ODU the 4-0 lead with 30 minutes left to play. Breen followed suit with a goal with 12 minutes left to bring her season total to double figures (10), the only Lady Monarch to do so. The game finished just like it started with King finding the back of the cage to give ODU the 6-0 shutout. This time her goal came off a deflection from Byas’ initial corner shot.
For the game, the Lady Monarchs recorded a season-high 37 shots, 11 in the first half and 26 in the second, while also setting a season-high record with 19 penalty corners (6/13).
Freshman Kealsie Robles earned her second shutout win of the season and now holds a 5-2 overall record. She has notched 20 saves to boast a 1.74 goals-against average on the year. Rachel Skonecki suffered the loss for the Hoyas, but recorded a season-high 18 saves on the night.
The Lady Monarchs will return to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Sunday when they host No. 5 Virginia at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available and can be found on the field hockey schedule page on odusports.com.
