BLACKSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis sophomore Adam Moundir kept his impressive run going after getting the better of No. 3 seeded Jaan Kononov of UMBC in the Semifinals of the 2015 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships. Moundir will take on Joao Montiero from Virginia Tech in the singles finals on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Against Kononov, Moundir dropped the first set (2-6), before winning sets two (6-3) and three (6-2).
Moundir now hopes to become the second Monarch in the past three years to punch his ticket to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY on November 12-15, 2015. Carlos Lopez Villa accomplished the feat back in 2013. Lopez Villa became only the second male in school history to capture the Regional Single’s crown and the first ever since the ITA downsized to only 12 regions.
Earlier on Monday in doubles, Old Dominion’s No 6 seeded team of Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic handled the No. 2 seeded duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro from Virginia Tech (7-5, 6-1) in the Semifinals. The win landed Moundir/Kijametovic in the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Final on Tuesday against another Virginia Tech tandem consisting of Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro, who are the tournament’s No. 5 seed. The match is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

The Old Dominion men’s tennis team continued to roar at the 2015 ITA Regional Championships, as sophomores Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl both advanced to the Quarterfinals at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sunday. To seal the deal on a successful day for Aljosa Piric’s Monarchs, the doubles tandem made up of Moundir and freshman Aziz Kijametovic reeled of their fourth consecutive victory, earning a spot in the tournament’s semifinals.
In the Round of the 32, Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl upset the No. 10 seed from Liberty, Sam Matheson in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Weindl followed that win up with a come-from-behind victory over the tournament’s No. 7 seed from VCU, Catalin Fifea. In the Round of 16, Weindl dropped the first set 4-6 and then was trailing the second set 5-2 to Fifea, before mounting a comeback and ultimately claiming a three-set victory (4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3). Next up for Old Dominion’s six-foot two-inch sophomore is a Quarterfinal match against the No. 4 seed and No. 70 nationally (pre-season) ranked Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech on Monday at 11:30 a.m.
No. 9 seeded Moundir kept his hot streak going on Sunday, when he beat Austin Jones from Navy 6-1, 6-2. The win placed ODU’s Luzern, Switzerland-native in the Round of 16, where he handled Tomas Hanzlik (6-3, 6-4). In the Quarterfinals on Monday at 11:30 a.m., Moundir will square-off with Virginia’s Mac Styslinger for a chance to compete in the ITA Regional’s semifinals. Styslinger entered the ITA Preseason rankings at No. 125 and is the tournament’s No. 8 seed.
ODU sophomore Jacob Nicolussi advanced to the Round of 32 after stunning the tournament’s No. 2 seed and the nation's the No. 43 ranked Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech in straight sets (6-2, 7-6(5)). On Sunday against Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik, Nicolussi won the first set, but ultimately fell in a tight three-setter (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).
In the Double’s Quarterfinals, ODU’s Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic handled Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik/Z. Lieb, 8-1. Moundir and Kijametovic will now have a showdown versus the No. 2 seeded Virginia Tech duo consisting of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Montiero on Monday at 8:30 a.m. Bjerrehus in nationally ranked No. 28 in singles, while Monteiro is ranked No. 70.
