BLACKSBURG, Va. - Adam Moundir, Jacob Nicolussi and Michael Weindl all have advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2015 ITA Regional Championships in at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Blacksburg, Va.
ODU’s Jacob Nicolussi paved his way to the Round of 32 after stunning the tournament's No. 2 seed and the nation's the No. 43 ranked Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech in straight sets (6-2, 7-6(5)). Nicolussi was down 5-0 in the second set tiebreak and reeled off seven straight points to take the match. The victory placed the Old Dominion sophomore transfer in a Sunday match (12:30 p.m.) against Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik.
Old Dominion’s No. 9 seeded Adam Moundir handled John Quenard from the University of Richmond in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), for the right to take on Austin Jones from Navy on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Weindl got the better of Melker Svard from UMBC (6-4, 6-0) in the Round of 128 and then was too much for Georgetown's Peter Beatty (0-6, 6-0, 7-5).
In doubles, the Old Dominion tandem of Adam Moundir and teammate Aziz Kijametovic have reeled off three straight wins to advance to the Round of 8 on Sunday. Moundir and Kijametovic will next take on Tomas Hanzlik and Z. Lieb of Penn State Sunday at 8:30 a.m. for a chance to compete in the semifinals.
This weekend, Virginia Tech is hosting players from 24 teams from around the region including Bucknell, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, Hampton, James Madison, Liberty, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary’s, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s, Temple, UMBC, VCU, Villanova, Virginia and William & Mary.
