De Corte, Simmermacher Wrap up Competition at Spirit International

TRINITY, Texas -- Two members of the Old Dominion women’s golf team competed in the highly renowned Spirit International Amateur Golf Tournament from Oct. 9-15 at the Whispering Pines Golf Club adjacent to Camp Olympia in Trinity, Texas. Freshman Charlotte De Corte represented her home country of Belgium while sophomore Maggie Simmermacher played for Argentina. All three rounds of the event were broadcast on the Golf Channel.

De Corte, who was selected as one of just two women’s golfers to represent Belgium, helped her home country to a ninth place finish out of the 20 participating nations. Coupled with Leslie Coots, the Belgian duo was tied for first place with eventual champion Mexico after shooting a 64 in round one and was tied for second after day two. De Corte and Coots combined for a score of 64+69+70=203 (-13).

Simmermacher, who was Conference USA’s Freshman of the Year last spring, helped her native Argentina to a 14th place finish at the event. Simmermacher and Delfina Acosta shot a 70 in round one and a 72 in round two before capping off the tournament with a strong final round of 66. For the tournament, the Argentinean pair shot 70+72+66=208 (-8) and passed up Colombia, Denmark and Norway in the final round.

Individually, De Corte and Simmermacher both sunk eight birdies.

The ODU women’s golf team will be back in action this Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Fighting Camel Classic at the Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek, N.C.
