No. 11 ODU Takes On No. 7 Maryland Wednesday Night

NORFOLK, Va. – After going 2-0 last weekend and moving up to No. 11 in the most recent NFHCA poll, the Lady Monarchs will take on No. 7 Maryland on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

ODU capped its 2-0 weekend with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over No. 5 UVA on Sunday, which marked the fifth ranked opponent the team has taken down this season. Junior Casey Dolan scored for the third time and notched her first game-winner of the season after recording the golden goal in double-overtime. The Lady Monarchs are currently 8-3 overall and 5-2 against teams ranked in the NFHCA top-20 poll. 

Including the matchup against Maryland and the upcoming dual with BIG EAST foe, No. 2 UConn, ODU will have taken on seven ranked opponents in eight games.

Sarah Breen, a senior from Melbourne, Australia, leads the team in her final season as a Lady Monarch. She has recorded 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. She also ranks sixth nationally in goals per game (1.00) and 11th in points per game (2.22). Both also rank second in the BIG EAST. Danielle Grega and Teisha King are the only other Lady Monarchs to reach double-digit points. Grega has notched eight goals and one assist, while King has tallied four goals and four helpers. Kealsie Robles is the Lady Monarchs’ starting goalie and has notched a 1.71 goals-against average and 27 saves.

Maryland won its ninth straight game Friday with a 1-0 win at Penn State. Senior Alyssa Parker scored the game's lone goal when she finished off a pass from the left side in the 19th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made three saves and redshirt senior Kasey Tapman had two defensive saves to preserve the shutout. With the Terrapins’ victory last Sunday, head coach Missy Meharg became the fourth coach in Division I history to reach the 500-win mark. In her 28 years as head coach, she’s led Maryland to a record of 501-122-9 (.800), seven NCAA titles, 20 conference titles and 16 Final Fours.

Twelve Terrapins have combined to score 50 goals so far this season, with twenty-five of Maryland’s 50 goals coming off of penalty corners. On the flip side, the Terrapins have allowed just six goals off of corners this year. Linnea Gonzales leads the team with 10 goals, to go along with her two assists. She has totaled 22 points on the season, which is just one point higher than second, third and fourth place. Sarah Sprink, Anna Dessoye and Emma Rissinger has all notched 21 points, with Dessoye and Rissinger both recording five goals and 11 assists. Sarah Holliday has played the majority of time in goal for the Terps and has notched a perfect 9-0 record, a 1.33 goals-against average and 23 saves.
