NORFOLK, Va. –The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (5-9-1, 3-2-0) took down UAB (2-10-1, 1-6-1) by a 2-0 score on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 578 at the ODU Soccer Complex. This conference showdown was rescheduled due to inclement weather in the wake of Hurricane Joaquin, therefore was the only Conference USA match of the night.
In the 29th minute, it was two Old Dominion freshmen who connected to lift the Lady Soccer Monarchs to an early 1-0 advantage when Iris Achterhof rebounded her own corner kick and sent it back into the box, only to find Kira Laurento, who booted the ball into the back of the UAB net. The goal was Laurento’s second of the season, while the dish was Achterhof’s second assist of the year.
ODU took the 1-0 lead with them into the locker rooms at halftime, as Erin Kinz compiled five first half saves. UAB fired off eight shots in the first 45 minutes of action, while Old Dominion attempted seven. The Blazers and Lady Monarchs each took four first half corners.
In the 76th minute, Achterhof gobbled up another one of her deflected corners, only to send it back into the box again, this time finding teammate Deirdre Bradley, who put away her shot towards the near post from six yards out. The goal was Bradley’s first points of her young collegiate career, while the assist was Achterhof’s second of the game and third of the season.
Despite 13 shots by the Blazers, the Lady Soccer Monarchs defense hung tough, holding UAB scoreless for the full 90 minutes. The shutout was the defense’s and Erin Kinz’s third of the 2015 season. Kinz tallied five saves in the win, while UAB’s Kelsey Daugherty also compiled five in the loss.
