BALTIMORE – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team scored three second half goals to defeat Loyola University Maryland, 3-0, on Saturday night at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex.
ODU (2-1-0) used second half goals from Ryan Condotta, Josue Henriquez and Johan De Picker to pull away from the Greyhounds.
Loyola (0-2-1) employed a defensive style of play, packing it in on the defensive end and relying on counters for its offensive attack. The Greyhounds registered just one shot on goal in the game.
“We stressed patience and composure at halftime,” said head coach Alan Dawson. “I think we played a very good second half, even though we didn’t score until relatively late. Then, we finished the game off extremely well.”
After the scoreless first half, Condotta netted the Monarchs’ first goal and what would end up being the match winner, hammering home a Nick Hutchinson cross in the 60th minute. The goal was Condotta’s first of the season and eighth of his career.
In the 87th minute, senior Josue Henriquez added an insurance goal for his team-leading fourth score of the season. Freshman Johan De Picker registered the assist on the goal for the first point of his collegiate career.
The freshman’s night was not over, however, as De Picker then scored the first goal of his college career in the 90th minute, curling in a shot into the upper right 90. Geoffrey Hill picked up the assist on De Picker’s score.
“I thought our bench was terrific, particularly Johan De Picker,” said Dawson. “He had a goal and an assist tonight in 10 minutes, so we really have some depth off the bench.”
The Monarchs outshot Loyola, 18-7, in the match and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Alex Tiesenhausen picked up his first shutout of the season, being forced to make just one save.
ODU now returns to Norfolk for the 40th annual STIHL Classic next weekend.
“It’s going to be good to get home and this, particularly, is a big weekend for us,” said Dawson. “The Friday night game is going to be rocking. We’re looking forward to get back to the Lion’s Den.”
