NORFOLK, Va. – Passionate, dynamic, inspiring and coach of the Old Dominion women’s basketball team, Karen Barefoot is a master motivator, not only of teams, but of individuals and organizations, encouraging them to succeed beyond even their own expectations. Barefoot can be seen speaking at a magnitude of events and every week ODUSports will highlight where she will bring her valuable insight and advice.
Barefoot is set to visit the Peninsula Sports Club as its first headline speaker of 2015 on Monday, September 28 at the Crowne Plaza Marina-Hampton in Hampton, Va. at noon. The cost is $15 per person, which includes lunch. The event is expected to reach over 100 attendees, including basketball official Bryan Kersey. Barefoot has had ties to the Peninsula Sports Club since high school, as she earned the club's Most Outstanding Player honors four times while attending Menchville High School. She continued her success in college, bringing home four more MOP awards at Christopher Newport. Barefoot was a three-time Kodak/WBCA All-American at CNU, where she became the first player, male or female, in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and record 1,000 assists. She remains the all-time leader in assists and also leads CNU's record book in steals, with 560.
After graduation, Barefoot entered the coaching world and started the first female athletic program at the Apprentice School. She helped grow the program into a national contender and led the team to the NSCAA National Championship in 2001. The Peninsula Sports Club once again honored Barefoot, this time with the Special Achievement award and the Board of Directors award.
